Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns takes a deep dive into the event that led up to the American Revolutionary War, its aftermath and the birth of a nation in this six-part docuseries, “The American Revolution,” airing on Sunday, November 16.

The documentary premieres at 8 p.m. ET on PBS. Those without cable can watch the show for free through DIRECTV, which offers a free trial to new users, or online on the PBS website.

Thirteen American colonies unite in rebellion, win an eight-year war to secure their independence, and establish a new form of government that would inspire democratic movements at home and around the globe.

“What begins as a political clash between colonists and the British government grows into a bloody struggle that will engage more than two dozen nations and forever change the world,” PBS said in the descriptions of the docuseries.

The documentary miniseries is co-directed by Sarah Botstein and David P. Schmidt.
