Kayla Abney’s Northampton bar creates safe space for Queer community

MassLive recently asked readers to identify people who are leaders from the LGBTQ+ community throughout the state, working to make a difference in their own area of interest, be it politics, education, business or the arts.

Profiles of these leaders will be published through the rest of February. These are people our readers have identified as inspirational, who may be doing good acts for their communities. They are being recognized for their accomplishments, leadership and commitment to inspire change.

Emerging Leaders

Kayla Abney, Owner of Majestic Saloon in Northmpaton.Sebastian Restrepo

Kayla Abney

Age: 34

Community: Northampton

Her story: Queer bars and venues are few and far-between in Western Massachusetts. As the co-owner and operator of The Majestic Saloon in Northampton, Abney said she has the “extremely important” task of providing a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community in the area.

“I’ve been working in the service industry for my entire life and I’ve always described working as a bartender as being the host of your own party,” the 34-year-old said. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to re-open and re-imagine Majestic post COVID lockdown.”

Majestic Saloon is known for hosting weekly events from karaoke and bingo to drag shows and dance parties.

Aside from the events, the venue’s cocktails drip with pride by being named after Queer icons like Cher, Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton and more. Its these little touches that Abney said make Majestic Saloon more than just a bar.

“Over the years, Majestic has transformed into a cultural hub for queer art, expression and activism,” she said. “Majestic is a result of not only my vision, but the vibrant community that supports it.”

The community has felt the love that Abney has worked hard to cultivate. One Facebook reviewer called Majestic a “safe place to be” while another said, “it’s all about the great people and atmosphere in this bar.”

In her words: “Put yourself out there. It’s scary at first but you never know what possibilities are out there conspiring in your favor.”

We’re always open to hearing about more inspiring people. If you’d like to suggest someone else who should be recognized, please fill out this form.
