Karen Read trial live updates: Defense expert witness resumes testimony Wednesday

Karen Read‘s second trial in connection with the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, continues on Wednesday in Dedham’s Norfolk Superior Court before Judge Beverly Cannone.

On Tuesday, the jury heard testimony from a medical examiner hired by the defense, who rebutted the prosecution’s theory of the case. The last witness Read’s defense intends to call will continue his testimony under direct examination when the trial resumes at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The retrial is nearing an end. Lawyers told Cannone Tuesday the case could be ready to go to the jury as soon as Friday.

Read, 45, is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death in connection with the death of O’Keefe, who was found outside the home of a fellow Boston police officer on Jan. 29, 2022.

Norfolk County prosecutors say Read struck O’Keefe with her SUV while driving intoxicated. Read’s attorneys say her car never struck O’Keefe and that others are to blame for his death.
