Karen Read trial: Jury deliberations resume Monday morning

Jurors in the Karen Read trial will continue their deliberations Monday morning, the first full day they will be able to discuss the case.

After lengthy closing arguments and instructions from Judge Beverly Cannone, 12 jurors selected to deliberate were sent out of the courtroom around 2:30 p.m. Friday. All jurors, including the six selected as alternates, were sent home for the weekend around 4:30 p.m.

Jurors will return to the courtroom at 9 a.m. Monday.

They can deliberate for as long as it takes to reach a unanimous verdict. At Read’s first trial last year, jurors deliberated for about five days before Cannone declared a mistrial.

Read, 45, is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death in the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe.

Prosecutors say Read backed her SUV into O’Keefe, then left him to die in the snow outside the home of a fellow Boston police officer in Canton on Jan. 29, 2022. Read’s defense has insisted there was no collision and others are responsible for O’Keefe’s death.

The jury heard from dozens of witnesses over eight weeks of trial.
