Testimony in the trial of Karen Read is expected to wrap up next week, and the case could be sent to the jury for deliberations as early as Monday.
Judge Beverly Cannone told jurors Friday afternoon as she dismissed court for the weekend that the trial was on schedule and they would begin deliberations next week, a timeline she has stuck to for the last few weeks.
While Cannone did not give any other details about next week’s schedule, according to NBC Boston, Read’s defense lawyers said after court Friday that they have only three witnesses left to call and expect to be done on Monday.
Prosecutors finished examining their final witness Friday morning. The defense has called three witnesses so far, a plow driver, dog bite expert and digital investigator.
Read is accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, by hitting him with her car after a night out drinking and leaving him outside in a blizzard in Canton on Jan. 29, 2022.
Read’s defense has claimed that she is being framed for O’Keefe’s death by friends who they were drinking with that night.
The trial began in April and has lasted 10 weeks thus far. It is unknown how long the jury will take to deliberate.
