Jurors in the Karen Read retrial will continue their deliberations Tuesday morning, the second full day the panel will be allowed to discuss the case.
The jury of seven women and five men has deliberated for about nine hours over the course of two days in the retrial. Jurors can deliberate for as long as it takes to reach a unanimous verdict.
On Monday, the first full day of deliberations, Read supporters lined the streets in front of and across from the Dedham courthouse where the trial took place. The crowds far outnumbered those that gathered for Read’s first trial.
Leaving the courtroom Monday, Read did not speak to reporters.
At Read’s first trial last year, jurors deliberated for about five days before Cannone declared a mistrial.
Read, 45, is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death in the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe.
Prosecutors say Read backed her SUV into O’Keefe, then left him to die in the snow outside the home of a fellow Boston police officer in Canton on Jan. 29, 2022. Read’s defense has insisted there was no collision and others are responsible for O’Keefe’s death.
The jury heard from dozens of witnesses over eight weeks of trial.
