Jrue Holiday explains unique connection to Celtics fanbase

All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday’s head is probably still spinning after he was traded twice in the past week from the Bucks and Blazers before ending up with the Celtics on Sunday. Still, Holiday was appreciative of his new landing spot on a variety of fronts in his introductory press conference on Wednesday after hi first practice at training camp.

“It’s definitely been a whirlwind,” Holiday said. “My family was established there, school and things like that, and we had friends. But it’s also just a part of the business. I feel like coming here is definitely my best chance of winning and being able to help the guys here that have made big moves and done great things in this league. So I’m here to really just help step up that game and become a champion.”

While Holiday tries to make himself comfortable with the area, one of their newest additions appears intent on fitting right in with the TD Garden crowd. He compared himself to them with a few unique characteristics he thinks they share.

“I’m really just glad to be here and part of this championship group,” Holiday said. “Not only that, but what this stands for. Growing up in LA as a Lakers fan, I know a lot of my family is probably hurt, but this is a blue-collar town. They like people that work hard and they put their heart into it. That’s just the type of person I am. Every time I step onto the court I give my everything.”

Holiday has been in countless battles with the Celtics throughout his career, having lost playoff Game 7s at TD Garden in 2012 with the 76ers and back in 2022 with the Bucks. When he takes the floor with the support of the Garden crowd for the first time next week, the 33-year-old is eager to feel that energy from the other perspective.

“They’re a bit crazy. I’m not gonna lie to you,” Holiday said. “They get rowdy, they get in your face. Definitely one of the best sixth men in the league, if not the best. I love the aggression. I love the environment. I think they care more about hard work on defense and getting loose balls and stuff like that over maybe windmill dunks and things of that nature. But again, that’s the type of guy I am. I’m 10 toes to the ground and I’m gonna push and grin as hard as I can. So the fans are, are literally insane and I’m proud to be of that coming into this year.”

Holiday will make his preseason debut for the Celtics at TD Garden on Sunday night against the 76ers.
