Jrue Holiday clarifies surprise comment on Celtics stars after Game 2

BOSTON — Jrue Holiday played the best game of the postseason in the Celtics’ Game 2 win over the Mavericks Sunday night. However, the veteran guard wanted to put his attention on his teammates as he opened his press conference on Sunday night.

Jason Kidd created a firestorm on Saturday when he called Jaylen Brown the best player on the Celtics at his press conference after Mavericks practice.

“Well Jaylen is their best player so looking at what he does defensively,” Kidd said. “He picked up Luka full court, he got to the free throw line, he did everything and that’s what your best player does. Just understanding he plays both sides, offense and defense, at a high rate and he’s been doing that all playoffs. We’re talking about Eastern Conference MVP, and it seems like he is continuing to pick up where he left off.”

Holiday appeared to double down on those comments during his own media availability.

“I don’t think he’s lying,” Holiday said when told about Kidd’s comments about Brown.

Holiday elected to walk back those comments on Sunday night after scoring a team-high xx points in the Celtics win

“If I could say something before we jump in. I want to address the comment that was made yesterday,” Holiday said. “I feel like people kind of took that out of context. I’ve been hearing that I prefer JB over JT and that’s not what that was. I like to praise my teammates. I like to praise my teammates when they’re playing well, and I feel like that’s what I did my best to do.”

Holiday went on to single out Tatum for his support since Holiday was acquired from the Blazers days before the start of training camp.

“When I got here, JT was the first person to text me,” Holiday said. “I already know that — and both of them know how I feel about them, how I feel about them as players.

“But to compare them is something that I would never do because they’re two completely different players as well as being on the same team, and the things that they have done in this organization and the things that they have done against me as an opponent. I say, like, how they play together and how they work together is something that is sacred and something that can’t be broken. So just to address the comment yesterday, I do not prefer one or the other. I prefer both. Both of them are superstars, and it’s being shown out here on the biggest stage in the world.”

Holiday and the Celtics will look to extend Boston’s 2-0 series lead alongside Tatum and Brown against the Mavericks on Wednesday night in Dallas.
