Jim Montgomery praises Bruins rookie before likely AHL return

BOSTON — Mason Lohrei’s first stint in the NHL likely comes to an end on Saturday.

Matt Grzelcyk is eligible to come off long-term injured reserve when the Bruins face the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, at 1 p.m. Rather than keep Lohrei as a seventh defenseman, Boston will almost certainly send him back to Providence for regular minutes and more development.

But his initial foray, which has displayed both his skills and his youth, has done nothing to dampen the franchise’s enthusiasm about his future. Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said Lohrei has been an eager learner during his time in the NHL.

“We’ve been communicating, showing Mason video after every game,” Montgomery said. “Joe Sacco and the assistant coaches have done a really good job of showing him where he’s really good and where his game needs to develop. Those things are leading rushes and being firm on pucks. Puck battles. In our defense, takeaway time and space.”

Montgomery liked what he saw from the 10 games the rookie defenseman spent in Boston and was confident he’d be an impact player eventually.

“He’s a tremendous young hockey player. We’re so excited that we have him,” said Montgomery, who coached in junior hockey and college before the NHL. “There’s growing pains with young players. I’m sure there was with Bergeron when he was 18,” he said, paused and then smiled. “Eh probably not.”

Lohrei had a goal and three assists in 10 games. He had five penalties and was a minus-3. He had an assist and a penalty in Friday’s loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
