With every move he makes being analyzed and overanalyzed, rookie Matt Poitras had a quiet game in the Bruins’ 3-1 victory over the Sharks on Thursday at the SAP Center in San Jose.
Poitras, of course, is Boston’s 19-year-old rookie who opened eyes with a strong preseason. Because of his age and experience, the Bruins can’t send him to the AHL, so he’ll either stay in Boston or go back to juniors and the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League.

The Bruins have nine games to decide whether to keep Poitras in the NHL before collective bargaining rules say they’d have to burn a year of his rookie contract. Thursday was the third of those nine games.
Poitras made a nice play late in the first period to keep the puck in the zone and set up the Bruins for an offensive possession that eventually led to Brad Marchand’s goal. But he wasn’t able to make an offensive impact beyond that.
Jim Montgomery hoped that playing with Marchand would help spark both the rookie and his captain. But during the second period, he moved Marchand up to skate with David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha.
Poitras played 12 minutes, 18 seconds, including very brief stints on the power play and penalty kill. He won four of nine faceoffs in the game and didn’t attempt a shot.
“To be a good pro you’ve got to learn from the game and move on, get ready for the next one,” said Montgomery, whose team plays the Kings in Los Angeles on Saturday. “He’s going to get a real good test when we go to L.A.”
