Jayson Tatum’s dad named interim head coach of Australian pro team

While Jayson Tatum is busy putting up numbers for the Celtics stateside, his dad is onto newer adventures overseas. Jayson’s father, Justin, was named interim head coach of the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League in Australia, the team announced.

The Hawks are in the middle of a tough start to the season as they’re just 2-7, which is why they parted ways with coach Jacob Jackomas. Illawarra originally brought in Justin Tatum to the helm as a North American scout and special advisor to basketball operations. He was as an assistant coach on the staff as he now takes over the team.

Interestingly, the Hawks do have a potential NBA draft pick on their roster in AJ Johnson. He’s currently projected to be taken in the first round of next year’s draft as he chose to go overseas instead of playing a one-and-done career at Texas.

LaMelo Ball also suited up for the Hawks before being selected as a top pick to the Hornets. Johnson hasn’t played much this season, averaging just 5.6 minutes in his eight total games. But the combo guard is expected to be taken high next draft.

Justin Tatum will look to get the team in order going forward now. That’s an interesting wrinkle for the Tatum family while Jayson has had a strong start to this season in the NBA.
