Jaylen Brown reveals who created nickname with Kristaps Porzingis

While Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis have only played a half-season together, their friendship has been a nice surprise for the two. Brown said they live in the same building as neighbors, so they often ride back together after road trips. So there’s been a growing bond between the two talented Celtics.

Recently, Brown took to social media with a simple phrase when talking about the duo: “cookies and cream.” The post was accompanied by a highlight reel of Brown and Porzingis as they’ve linked up on the court frequently this season. Brown revealed after the Celtics’ blowout win over the Heat who gave them that nickname recently.

“I actually didn’t come up with that,” Brown said. “Joe Mazzulla, I’ve gotta give him the credit. He’s the one that came up with that.”

It remains to be seen whether cookies and cream will stick, but it’s at least a fun wrinkle to the Celtics’ season. Porzingis recently complimented Brown’s leadership, pointing out his willingness to change his game every night — all while playing impressive defense — sets the tone for the rest of the team.

The Celtics will hope the pair continues to develop their chemistry on the court. Porzingis looked like the game-changing talent he is against the Heat on Thursday, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. The big man tweaked his ankle in third quarter, though it doesn’t appear too serious at this point. But the big man’s impact was undeniable as he appears to be the Celtics’ missing piece of the puzzle.

“It’s huge,” Brown said of Porzingis. “And every night you won’t be able to see it, but nights like tonight, you can see it a little better. Especially in that first half, he only took nine shots and got 19 points. But him just being out there as a threat, teams have to respect his 3-point shooting ability and then he’s 7-foot-3 at the rim. So it just allows me, Jayson (Tatum), everybody else on our team to have freedom knowing we’ve got somebody like that at the rim. So he’s big for us.”
