It’s Christmas Day and you need a drink. Can you buy alcohol at the store?

Want to spice up your non-alcoholic eggnog on Christmas Day? You might be too late.

If you need alcohol to whip up a holiday cocktail after your Christmas dinner, heading to the stores to restock the basement bar may prove difficult.

In Massachusetts, only certain holidays are subject to laws that restrict the type of work or the kind of commercial activities that are allowed to remain open — notably Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, according to the state.

Christmas falls under Massachusetts’ “Blue Laws,” or restrictions on which businesses can be open on Sundays or holidays, the government’s website said. Christmas Day falls under this restriction, along with Columbus Day before noon, Veterans’ Day before 1 p.m. and Thanksgiving.

Therefore, all package stores in Massachusetts will be closed on Christmas Monday, according to the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission’s holiday calendar for 2023.

In addition, grocery stores also fall under the state’s “Blue Laws” restrictions, so most grocery chains will be closed on Monday — so no bourbon to go with your eggnog while you open presents from Santa Claus.
