Interesting Red Sox prospect goes 4-for-4, homers in third straight game

Red Sox prospect Kristian Campbell went 4-for-4 with a homer, double, walk, two runs and three RBIs in High-A Greenville’s 8-2 win over Asheville on Thursday.

He has homered in three consecutive games, including one blast with a 110 mph exit velocity. The 21-year-old is 16-for-58 (.276) with a .391 on-base percentage, .569 slugging percentage, .960 OPS, four homers, five doubles, 12 RBIs, 11 runs, one steal, 10 walks and 19 strikeouts in 16 games so far this season for the Drive.

Boston drafted him in the compensation fourth round (132nd overall) out of Georgia Tech in 2023. He’s batting .294 with a .418 on-base percentage, .516 slugging percentage, .934 OPS, five homers, nine doubles, two triples, 17 RBIs, 20 runs, 20 walks and 37 strikeouts in his first 38 professional games.

He has started seven games at second base, five games in center field and three games at DH this season. He also made starts at both corner outfield spots last year.

Campbell entered 2024 ranked Boston’s No. 30 prospect on MassLive’s Top 25 Red Sox prospect list.

He’s known for his bat-to-ball skills. The 6-foot-3, 191-pounder struck out only 17 times in 217 plate appearances (7.8% strikeout percentage) at Georgia Tech as a sophomore last spring. He had a 90% contact rate and 94% in-zone contact rate, per Baseball America.

Other minor league updates from Thursday

~ Double-A Portland’s home game against Reading got rained out. The game will be made up Saturday as part of a doubleheader in Portland.

~ The Red Sox have optioned Bobby Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester.

~ Nick Pivetta made a rehab start for Worcester. He went 3 innings and allowed four runs, three hits and four walks while striking out five. The WooSox lost 7-1 to Lehigh Valley.

~ Brian Van Belle pitched 4 scoreless and hitless innings in relief for Worcester. He walked one and struck out three.

~ Chase Meidroth, a 22-year-old infielder, went 0-for-2 but walked three times in the WooSox’s loss. He now has 25 walks compared to just 11 strikeouts. His on-base percentage is up to .455.
