Inside The Herd: A welcoming community for moms and caregivers

At a business dedicated to creating a safe space for new and expecting mothers and families, you’ll notice an array of activities upon entering.

Some mothers are standing in a circle enjoying coffee, some are calming their babies, some are enjoying moments of quiet on the couch, and some are even in yoga poses.

The Herd, located at 24 Exchange St. in Holliston, creates a unique environment meant to benefit a community of caregivers.

The business was built from a desire that two mothers had — to make a welcoming space that mothers and families can come to, to feel empowered, educated and looked after.

Owners Abbie Hausermann, a perinatal mental health expert, and Tina Agostinelli, a lactation educator, have dreamt to bring the business alive. And for the last six months, the business has flourished since opening, welcoming in mothers, caregivers, infants and more.

“For us to be able to give back to our community of moms and the next generation of moms coming in, having them feel validated, supported, heard, is the most bucket-filling thing I could have ever imagined doing,” Agostinelli told MassLive.

“Community is what makes people feel better and safe and feel like they have a place to land,” Hausermann added.

The Herd offers variety to its community, including weekly classes such as music and movement, baby and bump-friendly yoga and educational workshops.

The Herd also has a resource wall of providers, so caregivers can find the care they and their families need without having to go far.

These resources include a physical therapist, a pelvic floor specialist, a nutrition specialist, a speech language pathologist, child therapists and more — all while making guests feel like they’re not in a traditional medical setting.

“We have intentionally built this community of resources and providers and specialists, and I think part of that is it takes away that extra stress from mom to find it on her own,” Hausermann said.

Ultimately, The Herd continues to strive to nurture the space that makes you just feel good about being there.

The two described the space to be a place that feels like you’re coming to a friend’s house, where you can feel comfortable and be yourself.

“The idea that you can come here and make meaningful connections with other moms and caregivers, but also a place where your baby can come and just be a baby, is what’s rewarding,” Hausermann said.
