Injured Red Sox outfielder at 86%, must add another 4% before returning

BOSTON — The Red Sox want injured right fielder Wilyer Abreu (right calf strain) at 90% before activating him from the 10-day injured list. They’re tracking his recovery with such precision that they know he needs to improve another 4% to reach their target.

“We’re shooting at one point next week,” manager Alex Cora said before the Red Sox’ game against the Yankees on Saturday. “I’m not sure if it’s the Athletics or Tampa. But it seems like he’s feeling a lot better. Yesterday he ran at 86%. Like I said, getting to 90% is good enough for us. So we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Cora said the training staff can measure his exact recovery percentage (86%) using data from the Catapult vest Abreu wears during workouts.

“So they’re able to measure with that,” Cora said.

The Sox will host the Athletics at Fenway Park on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Then they will travel to Tampa to play the Rays on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Abreu is expected back at some point during this six-game stretch.

Abreu has been on the injured list since Aug. 21. Initially, he was confident he would avoid the IL, believing he needed only two days of rest before returning. But his timetable has been pushed back multiple times.

Abreu is batting .253 with a .325 on-base percentage, .486 slugging percentage, .811 OPS, 22 homers, 16 doubles and 69 RBIs in 108 games (395 plate appearances). He leads the team in home runs and ranks fifth in fWAR (2.7).

The 2024 Gold Glove winner has 13 defensive runs saved in 804 ⅓ innings.
