SHELDON, Ill. — A Newton County Sheriff’s deputy is in critical condition after being shot while assisting another agency in an officer-involved shooting investigation, WAND reported.

The Illinois State Police confirmed that Corporal Brandon Schreiber was shot on Sept. 1 while aiding the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office, according to the report. Schreiber was initially taken to a hospital and later airlifted to a separate trauma center, where he remains in critical condition.
The incident began when the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the Illinois State Police for an officer-involved shooting investigation. According to preliminary reports, officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department were pursuing an armed suspect who was holding a hostage.
The pursuit crossed into Indiana, involving the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, before returning to Illinois, where the suspect crashed in Sheldon, according to the report. Following the crash, the suspect exited the vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During the exchange, both the suspect and Schreiber were struck. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with law enforcement agencies from both Illinois and Indiana involved, according to the report.
