Rain from an overnight ice storm that made Massachusetts roads slick Monday morning will continue through the day as winds and temperatures rise, while forecasters watch for possible snow later this week.
The threat of icing from freezing rain that fell across Massachusetts since Sunday night will end by mid-morning Monday, forecasters say, but the rain will continue until mid to late afternoon. A Winter Weather Advisory issued Sunday night ended 6 a.m. Monday.
Temperatures were above freezing before sunrise and will rise into the 40s across the state during the daytime, forecasters said, with areas like Boston potentially even reaching 50 degrees.
A High Wind Watch for strong, damaging winds has also been issued across Central and Western Massachusetts for Monday night through late Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.
Gusts between 15-25 mph are expected, with some up to 45 mph. There’s also a slight chance for snow showers overnight on Monday between midnight and 3 a.m. for all of Massachusetts, forecasters warned.
Following this, temperatures will plunge back to the 20s by Tuesday morning and remain cold for the rest of the week.
Forecasters are eyeing the chance for more snow showers across the state on New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day, though any accumulations should be light and fluffy.
