The new Reese’s Oreos are fantastic. Of course they are. They’re Oreos with peanut butter-ish filling and “Oreo cookie crumbs” mixed in.
But let’s make one thing clear: This cookie is not any sort of innovation. We already have Peanut Butter Oreos, Peanut Butter Mini Oreos, Peanut Butter Oreo Cakesters and Peanut Butter Pie Oreos. Heck, back in 2014, there was also an officially licensed “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo.”
They all taste basically the same: delicious.
That’s the worst part about this entire commercial cookie kerfuffle. I can’t even get mad about it. I see the giant cookie-shaped mouse trap and I’m walking directly into it because I get a sweet treat in the end.
Reese’s Oreos | Review
This whole endeavor is peak dystopian corporate chicanery that combines two of Oreo’s favorite pastimes: re-marketing something they already make and incorporating Oreos into Oreo filling.
Oreo has now released four different cookies that are filled with bits of ground-up Oreo. Past installments in this stupid series include “Cookies & Creme,” the “Most Oreo Oreo” and “Oreo Loaded.”
As for this cookie, it’s officially marketed as an “OREO® REESE’S Cookie,” which describes the filling as “Reese’s peanut buttery creme with Oreo cookie crumbs.”
This tells us a few things. One, companies love to market brands in all caps. Apparently, they’re convinced we’re more likely to buy stuff if they yell their names at us.
Two, the actual contents of the cookie are weirdly vague and nebulous. It’s not a “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup” cookie. That came out in 2014 and included chocolate in the filling.
Is there actual Reese’s peanut butter involved in this Oreo? According to the ingredients list, there is “Reese’s Peanut Butter flavored sauce,” which includes “peanuts, sugar, peanut oil, dextrose, salt, TBHQ and citric acid.”
Looking at the label for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, those appear to be the same ingredients used in the filling of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – save for peanut oil.
It all checks out, but it still feels like Oreo and Reese’s are hiding something about this oddly defined peanut butter goo. However, I still can’t be mad about it – because the cookie is delicious.
What does it taste like?
There’s a reason Oreo keeps releasing this flavor with a fresh coat of paint. It rules.
The chocolate Oreo is the perfect habitat for peanut butter creme. The nuttiness of peanut butter and the cocoa-laden bitterness of the outer cookie lay a fertile flavor foundation that explodes when all the sugar gets added to the equation.
It may sound counterintuitive, but adding Oreo crumbs to the filling actually makes it less sweet. It adds a little more cocoa and dials down the sweetness of the entire cookie, providing a more balanced crash of flavor when you take a bite.
Ultimately, it’s pretty similar to the other peanut butter Oreo spinoffs we’ve seen. That’s why they’re all grouped together in the all-time rankings.
