Massachusetts and the rest of southern New England are set to be spared a direct impact from Hurricane Erin, which has intensified to a Category 4 storm.
But the intense winds from the hurricane are expected to create high surf and dangerous rip currents at beaches along the coast. That is particularly true of south-facing beaches, National Weather Service forecasters wrote.
“Ocean-exposed beaches, especially those that are south-facing, are at a particular high risk for high surf/dangerous rip currents,” forecasters wrote.
Forecasters anticipate issuing a High Surf Advisory as soon as Tuesday afternoon, which could continue through Friday.
With dry weather and slightly cooler than normal temperatures expected this week, the Bay State’s beaches could fill up, forecasters noted.
Temperatures should remain in the 70s for most of the week, with low humidity creating “ideal weather for outdoor activities,” forecasters wrote. By Friday, temperatures should warm up to the high 70s or low 80s.
