The Red Sox were the hottest team in baseball going into the break and have cooled off slightly, but they still enter this matchup in strong playoff position for both the Wild Card and the AL East crown.

The Dodgers are atop the NL West and looking to become the first team to win consecutive World Series titles since the New York Yankees won three straight from 1998 through 2000.

The weekend series between the Red Sox and Dodgers will also see three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani get the start and take the mound on Sunday, July 27 for his seventh start of the season. His last time on the bump was Monday, July 21 when hr went three innings against the Minnesota Twins. He allowed a first inning home run and then hit his own first inning home run in that start in which he had three strikeouts and allowed four hits and walked one.

Ohtani is 3-1 in five career starts against Boston with a 2.52 ERA over 25 innings with 25 strikeouts. In his two previous appearances at Fenway Park, he combined for 14 strikeouts over nine innings, allowing only one run in the two starts. The last time he pitched at Fenway was April 17, 2023 when the Los Angeles Angels won 5-4 in a game where Ohtani pitched two innings.

And while Ohtani is making his sixth career pitching start at Fenway this weekend, teammate Clayton Kershaw is pitching against the Red Sox for the first and only time since the 2018 World Series when he lost Game 1 of the series at Fenway Park after going four innings and allowing 5 runs, and then also lost Game 5, after going seven innings but allowing 4 runs. Now, Kershaw will have former Red Sox MVP Mookie Betts on his side as he faces Boston for the first time in the regular season.
