The 26-year-old righty, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, missed four seasons (2020-22) while fulfilling his service commitment to the Navy, which deployed him to flight school. He had asked to serve in the Navy Reserves in order to continue his baseball career but the request was denied.

The Phillies selected him in last December’s Rule 5 draft. A Rule 5 pick must stay on his new team’s active major league roster (if healthy) for the entire season or else be placed on waivers, then offered back to his former team if no other club claims him. Song began the season on the injured list with back tightness. The Phillies reinstated from the 60-day IL and designated him for assignment July 29. In order for the Phillies to keep him, they would have had to give him an active roster spot for the rest of the season. Philadelphia couldn’t use one of its roster spots on an inexperienced pitcher unready for the big leagues during in a playoff race. He cleared waivers and got returned to the Red Sox for $50,000.

The Red Sox initially selected Song in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He was a first-round talent with a fastball up to 98 mph and a plus curveball but teams shied away because they knew he might miss significant time because of his commitment to the Navy. He topped out at 98 mph and had a plus curb

Song allowed only two runs, 10 hits and five walks while striking out 19 batter in 2019 with Lowell, Boston’s then-Short Season affiliate. He throws a four-seam fastball, slider, changeup, sinker and curveball.
