How Red Sox’ Masataka Yoshida is doing on his rehab assignment

Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida reached base three times for Double-A Portland on Saturday in his fourth game of his rehab assignment.

Yoshida — who is returning from an offseason right shoulder labral repair — went 2-for-3 with two singles, one walk and two RBIs in Portland’s 4-2 loss to New Hampshire.

He tied the game 1-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.

Yoshida was removed for a pinch runner in the seventh inning after he hit an RBI single to put Portland ahead 2-1.

He played seven innings in left field.

He has played two games in left field and two games at DH on his rehab assignment. The 31-year-old left-handed hitter has gone 4-for-12 with four singles, two walks, two RBIs, two runs and one strikeout in four games (two games with Triple-A Worcester, two games with Portland).

He’s expected to play again for Portland on Sunday before an off day Monday. The Red Sox plan to reinstate him from IL at some point during their upcoming seven-game homestand.

Boston returns home to host three games against the Rockies on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They then host the Rays for four games Thursday-Sunday before the All-Star Break.

“Monday’s off, then we’ll talk about what we do,” manager Alex Cora said Saturday. “He’ll be active during the homestand. When? We don’t know.”

Dobbins dominates

Red Sox starter Hunter Dobbins (right elbow strain) dominated in his first rehab start for Portland on Saturday. He went 5 innings, allowing one run, two hits and no walks while striking out eight.
