How late can people in Mass. buy alcohol on New Year’s Eve?

Whether it’s with a glass of bubbly, scotch or soda, the final night of the year is a time for joy and revelry, along with forethought to the new year ahead.

New Year’s Eve lands on a Sunday in 2023, which means there could be some limitations for anyone in Massachusetts who plans on going out to grab alcohol for parties at home.

According to the state’s “Blue Laws” — restrictions on which businesses can be open on Sundays or holidays — liquor sales are allowed as early as 11 a.m. and end no later than 11 p.m. or 11:30 p.m on a day before a legal holiday, according to state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

As well, New Year’s Eve is not considered a state holiday, according to the secretary of state’s office. However, New Year’s Day is recognized by the state. In 2022, Massachusetts recognized New Year’s Day on Jan. 2 due to the holiday landing on a Sunday.

But with all of this in mind, liquor stores are unlikely to be closed between Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. Leading up to the holiday weekend, it’s worth it to either call ahead to your nearest store that sells alcohol and see what their hours are, or stop by after 11 a.m. on Sunday for your last-minute purchase.

The only holidays where alcohol sales at liquor stores are prohibited in Massachusetts are on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or in the morning of Memorial Day, according to the secretary of state’s office.
