How Drake Maye’s brothers created funniest moment of NFL Draft

With Drake Maye almost certain to go early in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, his brothers Luke, Cole, and Beau all made the trip to Detroit.

Luke had the longest trek. Playing professional basketball in Japan, he had it written into his contract that he’d be able to leave the team for a couple days to see his youngest brother get drafted. While in Michigan, the NFL told the Maye brothers they wanted them to record a heartfelt message to Drake. He’d see the clip after he was selected and the quarterback’s NFL dream became a reality.

The brothers walked into a room with three chairs, and the league asked if they wanted to shoot the video together or separately. After surveying the setup, Cole, the biggest prankster of the bunch, had an idea. Growing up, the Mayes loved the ESPN 30-for-30 series, and Cole decided they should recreate a scene from the episode where the Michigan basketball team rips Christian Laettner.

“I was like, we’ve got three people? I mean, we’ve gotta do the Fab Five remake, right?” Cole said.

Immediately, his two other brothers were on board.

“I was like, ‘I think it’d be hilarious,’” Luke said. “I didn’t know if it was kosher in that type of environment, but Cole’s never been one to shy away from a little pushback.”

The thing left to sort out was who would drop the scene-ending profanity. Both older brothers looked to Beau, who is only 14 months old than Drake and lived with him in Chapel Hill.

“I kinda volunteered slash was volun-told,” Beau said. “I’m the closest to Drake.”

So with that, everything was set in motion. Drake was drafted by the Patriots at No. 3 overall, and when he went to a side room and put headphones on, the video began rolling, with his brothers each saying one thing.

Cole: “Pretty boy.”

Luke: “Overrated.”

Beau: “A (expletive)!”

When Beau dropped his line, Drake started dying laughing.

“Are you all serious? Are you serious?” Drake said aloud. “I was getting emotional for a sec, but I’m laughing now. Who let them say that?

The brothers knew it was a job well done. You can watch the clip here.

“For Beau to say ‘a (expletive)’ was just so poetic,” Luke said. “The smile at the end just really made it great. He did an incredible job.”

The NFL posted the video on its social media platforms and it soon went viral on Instagram, TikTok, and just about everywhere else. The initial post on X had over 5 million views; the clip was hilarious and spread like wildfire.

“Hindsight 20/20, I probably wouldn’t have preferred me cursing online on the NFL’s social media,” Beau said laughing. “But it’s all good.”
