Here’s where Worcester’s The Taco Spot plans to open another location

A Taco restaurant on Worcester’s Grafton Street is opening a new location in Shrewsbury.

The Taco Spot will open a second location at 6 Hartford Turnpike on Route 20 in mid-July or early August, according to owners Stephanie Ortiz and Alex Ortiz.

The husband-and-wife team said they have been working since March to open up the new location. Their goal is to expand their taco restaurant to other places, including Fitchburg, Webster and, someday, Boston.

“Little by little,” Alex Ortiz said about the expansion plan. “We are a small business that we are trying to grow.”

The hope for the Shrewsbury expansion is to bring The Taco Spot’s tacos to different parts of Massachusetts, the Ortizes told MassLive on Monday.

The origins of The Taco Spot restaurant in Worcester began with a beef birria taco recipe created by a husband-and-wife duo in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The recipe received positive reviews from their families and friends, and they began making the tacos for them on a monthly basis. In 2021, Alex and Stephanie Ortiz opened The Taco Spot, where they continue to sell their beef birria tacos on Grafton Street in Worcester.

“Business has been good,” Alex Ortiz said. “What’s been exciting for me is the reaction to the food.”

In addition to birria tacos, the restaurant also serves quesadillas, nachos, taquitos, and vampiro tacos — a type of Mexican street food that combines elements of a tostada and a quesadilla — according to the restaurant’s Instagram page.

The Taco Spot is located at 264 Grafton St. in Worcester and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday and 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
