Forecasters are warning of an unsettled weather pattern in the Bay State this Labor Day weekend, bringing a chance for overnight rain and a return to summer temperatures — and humidity.
The best chance for rain, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service, comes late Saturday into early Sunday morning as a cold front approaches Massachusetts. That cold front will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms to western areas by late afternoon Saturday, with more widespread precipitation overnight.
The rain is expected to linger over southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island until around 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Luckily for any holiday weekend barbecues, forecasters say the chances of additional precipitation on Sunday are slim.
Temperatures for the weekend ahead are expected to remain relatively cool in most areas of the state. In Boston, forecasters project highs of 79 and 83 degrees for Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Worcester will be slightly cooler, around 77 and 81 degrees for the weekend, while Springfield will largely match Boston, with projections of 79 and 84 degrees.
The Berkshires will be cooler, with temperatures around 73 degrees in Pittsfield on Saturday. A high near 80 is projected for Sunday.
On Cape Cod, temperatures are expected to remain below 80 degrees this weekend, with Barnstable forecast for highs near 77 and 79 degrees.
Monday will bring largely dry conditions and an early taste of fall, forecasters say.
“It’s looking like a pretty stellar start to September,” forecasters wrote.
In Eastern Massachusetts, forecasters predict a high around 76 on the holiday in Boston and a high near 74 in Barnstable. Worcester is looking at a projected high of 74, while Springfield will be around 76 degrees on Monday.
The Berkshires though will be significantly cooler, with a high around 69 degrees.
