Heavy rain, strong wind and possibly snow on its way to Massachusetts

Heavy rains, strong winds and possibly snow is headed towards Massachusetts over the weekend.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the Berkshires starting on Sunday.

“A strong cold front will move across the region during the late Sunday to early Monday timeframe, potentially leading to strong, gusty winds and a period of heavy rain,” the National Weather Service predicted.

The wind could be greater than 50 mph at times. There is also a chance that rain could change to accumulating snow Monday morning. One to two inches of snow is possible, the weather service said.

In Springfield, rain is expected after 1 p.m. on Sunday. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are possible by Sunday night.

Central Massachusetts is expected to get similar weather to Springfield starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday. And Boston likely won’t see rain until about 4 p.m. Sunday. Thunderstorms could start around 3 a.m. Monday morning.

A Gale Watch is in effect on the coast from Sunday afternoon until Monday.

“Strong winds can cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility,” the weather service said.

It suggested people remain in port during this time.
