‘Heartbreaking loss’: Boston Public Schools grieve child hit, killed by school bus

The Boston Public Schools community is in shock after a student was hit and killed by a school bus on Monday afternoon.

“Our hearts break for the child’s family and entire school community following this tragic incident,” a statement from Boston Public Schools (BPS) Committee Chair Jeri Robinson read.

Robinson and Superintendent Mary Skipper are working to support teachers, students and staff in the aftermath. Skipper said the community has been “grieving this heartbreaking loss.”

The fatal incident happened Monday at 2:44 p.m. in the Hyde Park neighborhood, near 107 Washington St., according to Boston Police.

“We extend our deepest condolences to our student’s family, school community, and all those affected by this tragedy,” a statement from the superintendent read.

“Our focus remains on supporting them and our school community. Our team is offering support services for any students, staff, and families,” Skipper’s statement read.

As of Tuesday morning, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident and the investigation continues, the department said. The child who was killed has not yet been publicly identified.

On Monday afternoon, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said it was unclear if the school bus driver would face charges, pending the investigation.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also spoke to reporters on Monday afternoon.

“I am completely heartbroken at imagining what this family is experiencing right now,” Wu said.

“No parent expects that they could send their child off to school and have something horrible happen,” Wu said.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox called the incident a “tragedy” and said the investigation is “fairly serious.”
