A new cocktail bar and lounge has opened in a former police precinct in Boston.
D16 Lounge & Bar, which officially opened Wednesday, Nov. 20, is located in the basement of Dillion’s at 955 Boylston St. in Back Bay.
The lounge is named after Division 16 of the Boston Police Department, which operated out of the address from 1887 to 1976, according to a press release.
The space was later acquired by the Institute of Contemporary Art and then by Boston Architectural College.
People can access D16 by walking down a staircase in Dillion’s or through the alleyway between the restaurant and neighboring fire station.
The space leans into its police roots with custom artwork featuring mugshots of criminals and paintings of officers with dogs.
However, the focal point of the lounge is the 27-foot bar with a built-in clock, brass details and high-top seating.
Guests can also grab a table or lounge on couches in the center of the room. D16 will also be available for private events.
The bar’s cocktails play into the historic roots of the space with names such as “Code 99,“ ”Kid’s Got Moxie“ and ”Tidal Bay” (Back Bay’s original name). Several cocktails are smoked inside a box for added taste and effect.
Food service is available throughout the space. D16’s menu features American-inspired small bites, including scallops and bacon, nori tacos, croquettes and frozen apple crisp.
D16 is open from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Food service ends at 11 p.m.
