Good Samaritan rescues people from fire in Mass.; Person hospitalized with burns

A good Samaritan rescued people from a fire in Beverly that left a person hospitalized with burns Friday morning, according to authorities.

Dispatchers received a call about the house fire on Berkley Avenue shortly before 7 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames coming from the second floor of the home, the Beverly Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

First responders confirmed the good Samaritan, a neighbor, had pulled people from the burning home, according to the department’s post.

Firefighters then began an aggressive attack on the blaze, extinguishing much of it within minutes. Crews from Beverly, Danvers, Hamilton and Salem worked through difficult conditions to confirm the fire had not spread to empty spaces in the attic and walls, the statement said.

One person was taken to the hospital with burns, and a bird was removed from the home safely by firefighters, according to the department.

“One critical component to the response to all of these emergencies was our tremendous staff of Public Safety Telecommunicators,” the department said. “They are the link that gets your emergencies to the right responders. We thank them for all of their service.”

The week has been particularly busy for Beverly firefighters. Along with responding to a brush fire on Enon Street early Wednesday, they also responded to a significant crash involving a commuter rail train and a car Wednesday afternoon, according to the statement.

“We were very fortunate to have no major injuries as a result of that crash,” the statement noted.
