GoFundMe pages raise money after 2 men killed in mass shooting while playing cornhole

Two men were enjoying playing cornhole with friends and family at a bar in Maine Wednesday night when a gunmen entered the bar, killing 18 people, including the two men, according to GoFundMe pages for the men’s families.

“Before we knew it our world changed. A husband, father, grandpa, son, and friend was lost,” one of the GoFundMe pages reads.

The gunman killed 18 people and injured 13 more at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) away, in Lewiston, Maine.

Joseph Walker, a manager at Schemengees Bar and Grille, was identified by family as one of the victims of the Lewiston mass shooting.

His father, Leroy Walker, told “NBC Nightly News’” Lester Holt that Joseph Walker tried to stop the gunman with a butcher knife.

“And he tried to go at the gunman to stop him from shooting anybody else. The gunman shot him twice through the stomach,” Leroy Walker said.

A GoFundMe has raised $2,524 of $10,000 goal as of Friday morning.

Peyton Brewer-Ross was also identified by family as one of the people killed in the shooting while playing cornhole.

“Peyton was doing one of the things he thought was so much fun – tossing around bean bags,” the GoFundMe read. “He was playing cornhole with friends at Schemengees Bar and Grill when his life was cut short, way too short.”

He leaves behind his wife Rachel, and their 2-year-old daughter Elle.

“The loss of Peyton is devastating. Please help. All funds will go to help with funeral expenses and to assist Elle as she grows up without her father,” the GoFundMe states.

It has raised $4,415 of its $50,000 goal.

GoFundMe has created a centralized hub to link to all the verified fundraisers related to the shooting.

“Our Trust & Safety team will continue to update the hub with more fundraisers as they are verified,” GoFundMe said in a statement.

As of Friday morning, five fundraisers had been verified.
