From vacant lots to family homes: South Holyoke’s housing revival

HOLYOKE — The whirr and bang of construction fills the air around Carlos Vega Park, where 20 new homes are rising from what used to be vacant lots in South Holyoke.

This project is a major step toward increasing homeownership in a neighborhood where more than 95% of residents rent. Homeownership was low, because there were no homes to buy, said Sarah Meier-Zimbler, director of development for the Holyoke Housing Authority.
