National Weather Service forecasters are warning of a freeze overnight in Massachusetts as temperatures plummet below normal averages for early October.
Parts of central, eastern, southeastern and western Massachusetts will all see sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 overnight Thursday. Along the coast, forecasters issued a Frost Advisory.
“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” forecasters wrote.
The cold stretch comes as an area of high pressure drifts toward Massachusetts, eventually settling in overhead on Thursday night. After a rainy Wednesday, conditions are expected to stay dry through the end of the work week.
Temperatures rebound slightly on Saturday, the warmest day of the weekend, reaching the mid to high 60s across the state. Some higher clouds will settle in Saturday, associated with a coastal storm forming well south of New England.
Conditions for the start of next week remain uncertain at this point.
A coastal storm moving north along the southeast and mid-Atlantic coasts is set to make its way to southern New England sometime late Sunday or early Monday.
At the same time, a strong high-pressure system is expected to settle in over parts of the Canadian Maritimes, Quebec and Maine. The gradient between the high pressure and the coastal storm could lead to strong, gusty winds and rough seas. The region could also see some rain.
“The greatest chances for rain remain over the south coast and Islands,” forecasters wrote.
