Former Patriots QB, WR have strong debuts with Raiders in win vs. Broncos

Week 1 featured an exciting rookie class that included Anthony Richardson and Bryce Young. But it also featured veteran players making their debuts with a new NFL team.

Jimmy Garoppolo and Jakobi Meyers took the field for the Raiders on Sunday, and the pair of ex-Patriots fared quite well for Josh McDaniels.

Garoppolo, who signed with the Raiders in March after six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, completed 20 of his 26 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

He began the game against the Broncos going 6-for-6 with a touchdown to Meyers. The wide reciever, meanwhile, finished with nine catches for 81 yards and two scores in Las Vegas’ 17-16 win over Denver. Meyers’ first touchdown was just the ninth of the fifth-year wide receiver’s career.

The two connected again in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard pass for the 17-16 lead. It marked the first multi-touchdown game for Meyers, who spent his first four NFL seasons in New England.

The Raiders were dealt a big blow late in the fourth quarter when Meyers was on the receiving end of a dangerous Kareem Jackson hit. The wide receiver stayed down for several minutes with many teammates surrounding him. Fortunately for Meyers, he was able to walk off the field with some assistance.

Garoppolo had a brief injury scare when he was taken off the field by officials to check for a concussion. Longtime Patriots backup quarterback Brian Hoyer came in briefly, but the quarterback returned after being cleared.

Meanwhile, in New England, Mac Jones went 35-for-54 for 316 yards and three touchdowns in the Patriots’ Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
