BURLINGTON, Colo. — A former K-9 with the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office fatally attacked the 3-year-old daughter of Burlington Police Chief Nathan Hill at his home, according to statements from local law enforcement officials.
The Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the house on Aug. 11. When deputies arrived, the child was unresponsive and the dog had been secured in a kennel. Paramedics transported the child to Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The child has not been publicly identified.
The German Shepherd previously served as a narcotics detection K-9 with the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office. It had recently been retired from duty after the agency discontinued its K-9 program and was later donated to the Burlington Police Department. At the time of the incident, the dog was not in active service and was being housed at Chief Hill’s residence. The Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office noted that the dog had not been trained in apprehension or bite work.
Following the attack, the dog was taken to the Burlington Dog Pound and humanely euthanized.
Authorities have not disclosed what may have led to the attack. The incident remains under investigation by the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office.
In a statement, the Burlington Police Department said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred within the city limits of Burlington, CO. Our hearts go out to Chief Nate Hill, his wife and family for the loss of their little girl, who was victim of a dog attack.
The City of Burlington staff is a family, and our hearts are hurting for the family and those affected by this unfortunate event.
We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office, Burlington Police Department, first responders and hospital staff for their swift and professional response. Their dedication and hard work in the face of adversity are truly commendable.”
