Former Celtics forward Matt Ryan has found a new home overseas after being waived by the Knicks ahead of the start of the season. The sharpshooter is finalizing a contract with Dubai Basketball according to Donatas Urbonas of BasketNews.
The 28-year-old appeared in 19 games last year for the Knicks during the 2024-25 season but he had to settle for an Exhibit 10 deal ahead of training camp this year. He was released in a roster crunch by New York last month and will now look to continue his career overseas.
In addition to being a member of the Celtics during their 2022 run to the NBA Finals, Ryan has bounced around the league over the past three seasons. He’s had stints with the Lakers, Wolves and Pelicans before spending a chunk of last season with the Knicks. He’s been a 40.2 percent 3-point shooter during his 82 NBA appearances, but his defensive limitations have prevented him from finding a permanent home in the NBA for now.
Ryan joins a Dubai Basketball team that has several former NBA players on the roster, including Davis Bertans, Justin Anderson, Dwayne Bacon, and former Celtics two-way big man Mfiondu Kabengele.
Ryan is no longer eligible for a two-way contract after having spent four seasons in the NBA so he will have to make a 15-man roster moving forward if he wants another chance in the NBA.
