When Amherst’s former assistant superintendent, Doreen Cunningham, began her position in 2017, she said she wanted to be a part of teaching people about race and racism. She thought it was a “great opportunity.”
However, in 2023, the Amherst Regional School District was roiled by accusations of staff mistreatment of LGBTQ+ students — and Cunningham was one of the individuals pinned at the center of it.
