Food, water, green energy at center of Pioneer Valley’s $1B economic development pitch

SPRINGFIELD — The Pioneer Valley has fallen economically from the top half of the nation’s metro areas, even lagging behind other similar areas in the Northeast.

Per capita gross domestic product in the Pioneer Valley is half that of Greater Boston, and below the metro area average for the U.S. At $53,000, GDP per capita in Springfield is 25% below Syracuse, New York, and 35% below Madison, Wisconsin.
