Flood watch in effect for Mass. with thunderstorms, heavy rain to soak state

A flood watch is in effect for the majority of Massachusetts until Tuesday night, as more waves of heavy rain and thunderstorms are on track to drench the state.

The flood watch was issued at 4 a.m. on Tuesday by the National Weather Service. The watch will remain in effect until Tuesday evening, forecasters said.

The areas under a flood watch are Western and Central Massachusetts. The counties of Worcester, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden and the Berkshires are all included.

“This is an area which had received 1 to 1.5 inches of rain from the severe thunderstorms, which moved through on Saturday,” forecasters said.

At least two more inches of rain are expected Tuesday in areas under the flood watch, with some spots possibly getting up to two and a half inches.

This could come in downpours at times, with thunderstorms embedded throughout the day, forecasters warned.

Poor drainage in streets are of concern, forecasters said, along with overfilled banks at rivers, creeks and streams in the region.

And while those in Eastern Massachusetts can expect a much lighter day of rain showers, forecasters say the fog could stick around until 3 p.m. A stray thunderstorm may form around 4 p.m. after the fog lifts.

Rainfall should only total between a quarter and half-inch in Eastern Massachusetts throughout the day, and the fog and showers are expected to return before midnight.

Temperatures could reach highs in the 50s and 60s during the day on Tuesday before dropping down to the low 50s overnight, then skyrocketing to the 70s by Wednesday afternoon.

Forecasters are eyeing a potential break in the wet weather on Wednesday, with spots of sunshine that may push through the daytime showers.
