Ex-Red Sox slugger, starting pitcher both agree to deals with Royals

The Royals agreed to contracts with two former Red Sox players on Friday.

MLB.com’s Anne Rogers reported that the Royals and outfielder Hunter Renfroe have agreed to a one-year, $5.5 million contract pending a physical. She reported that the deal includes a $7.5 million player option for 2025.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan also reported the Royals and starting pitcher Michael Wacha have agreed to a two-year, $32 million contract.

The 31-year-old Renfroe belted 31 homers and 33 doubles in his only season for the Red Sox in 2021. Boston then traded him to the Brewers for Jackie Bradley Jr., David Hamilton and Alex Binelas. Kansas City will be his fourth team since Boston dealt him. He has played for the Brewers, Angels and Reds over the past two seasons.

He slashed just .233/.297/.416/.713 with 20 homers and 31 doubles in 140 games (548 plate appearances) between the Angels and Reds last year.

The 32-year-old Wacha went 14-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 24 starts for the Padres this past season. He spent time on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. The righty went 11-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 23 starts for Boston in ‘22.

The Royals also signed starting pitcher Seth Lugo earlier this week to a three-year, $45 million contract. The Red Sox had met with Lugo’s representatives and were one of four bidders for him.
