Ex-Red Sox players: How are two DHs, Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts doing?

Former Red Sox players Xander Bogaerts and Mookie Betts both are playing new positions this year. Betts is playing plus defense at shortstop for the Dodgers with five defensive runs saved in 199 innings. Bogaerts has struggled at second (-3 DRS) for the Padres.

Betts is off to an incredible start offensively while Bogaerts has struggled mightily with the bat.

Below are updates on how Betts and Bogaerts as well as several other former Red Sox players performed during the first month of the 2024 season.

EX RED SOX PLAYERS FROM 2023 ROSTER:

Alex Verdugo, Yankees: The 27-year-old is batting .269 with a .363 on-base percentage, .442 slugging percentage, .805 OPS, four homers, six doubles, 13 RBIs, 17 runs, 16 walks and 10 strikeouts in 30 games (124 plate appearances). He has three defensive runs saved in 253 ⅔ innings in left field. Boston traded Verdugo to the Yankees in December for reliever Greg Weissert and pitching prospects Richard Fitts and Nicholas Judice.

Justin Turner, Blue Jays: The 39-year-old DH is .298 with a .376 on-base percentage, .511 slugging percentage, .887 OPS, four homers, eight doubles, 15 RBIs, 15 runs, 11 walks and 20 strikeouts in 29 games (109 plate appearances). Turner signed with Toronto in free agency in late January.

Chris Sale, Braves: The 35-year-old lefty has a 3.44 ERA (36 ⅔ innings, 14 runs), 0.95 WHIP, 42 strikeouts and seven walks in six starts. Opponents are batting .207 against him. His four-seam fastball has averaged 94.7 mph and his sinker has averaged 94.2 mph, per Baseball Savant. He’s in the 83rd percentile in expected ERA (2.80). Boston traded Sale to Atlanta for second baseman Vaughn Grissom in December.

James Paxton, Dodgers: The 35-year-old lefty has a 3.51 ERA (25 ⅔ innings, 10 runs), 1.68 WHIP, 22 walks and 15 strikeouts in five starts. Opponents are batting .233 against him. He’s in the eight percentile in expected ERA (6.16) and two percentile in walk percentage (19.3%). Paxton signed with the Dodgers in free agency in January.

Adam Duvall, Braves: The 35-year-old is 10-for-46 (.217 batting average) with a .302 on-base percentage, .391 slugging percentage, .693 OPS, two homers, two doubles, eight RBIs, seven runs, five walks and 14 strikeouts in 16 games. Duvall signed as a free agent with Atlanta in mid-March.

John Schreiber, Royals: The 30-year-old righty has a 0.63 ERA (14 ⅓ innings, one run), 0.77 WHIP, three walks and 10 strikeouts in 15 relief outings. Opponents have batted only .160 against him. Boston traded Schreiber to Kansas City in February for pitching prospect David Sandlin.

Kiké Hernández, Dodgers: The 32-year-old is 16-for-68 (.235 batting average) with a .293 on-base percentage, .294 slugging percentage, .587 OPS, one homer, one double, six RBIs, five runs, six walks and 11 strikeouts in 24 games. Boston traded Hernández to the Dodgers last July. He then re-signed with LA in free agency during the offseason.

Christian Arroyo, Brewers: The 28-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Brewers in the offseason. He’s 0-for-8 with four strikeouts and two walks in three games for Triple-A Nashville. He’s currently on the injured list, his second IL stint of the season.

Luis Urías, Mariners: The 26-year-old third baseman/second baseman is 5-for-34 ( .147 batting average) with a .275 on-base percentage, .412 slugging percentage, .687 OPS, two homers, three doubles, seven RBIs, three runs, three walks and 14 strikeouts in 17 games. Boston traded Urías to Seattle in November for right-handed reliever Isaiah Campbell.

Ryan Brasier, Dodgers: The 36-year-old righty has a 4.63 ERA (11 ⅔ innings, six runs), 1.11 WHIP, four holds, three walks and 12 strikeouts in 12 outings. Opponents are batting .233 against him. Brasier signed with LA after Boston designated him for assignment last season. He re-signed with them in the offseason.

Zack Littell, Rays: The 28-year-old, who pitched in two games for Boston last year before being designated for assignment, has a 3.27 ERA (33 innings, 12 earned runs), 1.36 WHIP, five walks and 35 strikeouts in six starts. He has allowed 40 hits and opponents are batting .296 against him.

A FEW OTHER FORMER RED SOX PLAYERS

Mookie Betts, Dodgers: The 31-year-old is batting .377 with a .481 on-base percentage, .623 slugging percentage, 1.104 OPS, six homers, 10 doubles, two triples, 25 RBIs, 29 runs, eight steals, 26 walks and 16 strikeouts in 33 games (156 plate appearances). He has five defensive runs saved in 199 innings at shortstop, a position he had not played in the big league until logging 98 innings there last year.

Xander Bogaerts, Padres: The 31-year-old is batting .217 with a .284 on-base percentage, .287 slugging percentage, .571 OPS, two homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs, 17 runs, 12 walks and 26 strikeouts in 32 games (141 plate appearances). He is playing a new position (second base) for the first time ever. He has negative-three defensive runs saved in 278 ⅓ innings there. He has posted a .273/.339/.412/.751 line in 187 games with San Diego since signing an 11-year, $280 million contract.

Nathan Eovaldi, Rangers: The 34-year-old righty has a 2.61 ERA (41 ⅓ innings, 12 runs), 1.16 WHIP, 19 walks and 44 strikeouts in seven starts. Opponents are batting just .201 against him.

J.D. Martinez, Mets: The DH signed with the Mets not long before spring training ended. He was activated April 26. The 36-year-old is 7-for-22 (.318) with a .348 on-base percentage, .409 slugging percentage, .757 OPS, two doubles, one RBI, one run, one walk and nine strikeouts in seven games so far.
