Ex-MLB GM explains why he’s ‘buying stock’ in Red Sox for 2026

The Red Sox have a promising future and showed reason for optimism in 2025. It was enough for one former MLB general manager to think it’s only just beginning of brighter seasons ahead.

“If I’m buying stock, I’m buying Red Sox stock right now,” Steve Phillips said on MLB Network. “They’ve got financial flexibility after moving Rafael Devers and with (Alex) Bregman coming off the books. Sure they’ve got a hole there now, but they could (re-sign) Bregman, and sign Pete Alonso and still be within the money of what they had in their budget this year for Bregman and Devers.”

Bregman opted out of the final two years of his contract with Boston. He’s expected to garner plenty of interest, and it’s unclear if he’ll return to the Red Sox.

Boston has also been linked to first baseman Pete Alonso, who would provide not only a veteran at the corner position, but a big bat in the lineup. Alonso is also durable, having played 162 games in each of the last two seasons.

After trading Devers and getting his $331 million contract off the books, the Red Sox have money to spend. Whether they make the kind of moves like they did last year remains to be seen, but Phillips is all in on the Red Sox.

“They’re in a great spot,” he said. “They’ve got money to spend, they’ve got major league depth and a surplus in the outfield that if they want to trade, people covet their outfielders.”

The Red Sox have four outfielders — Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony — and three spots. Duran and Abreu’s name have been brought in trade rumors, but it remains to be seen how they handle the four of them.

After making the postseason in 2025 for the first time since 2021, manager Alex Cora is confident chief baseball officer Craig Breslow will make the moves needed to not only return to the playoffs, but make a lengthy run.
