Ex-Celtics forward raves about former team in rematch

Grant Williams got to play his former team in the Celtics for the first time with a Hornets jersey on. This time, it fared much better compared to back in January when Williams was with the Mavericks. Williams finished with 23 points and seven rebounds in the Celtics’ win over the Hornets as the big man put together a nice night.

Of course, there’s a lot of love between Williams and his former teammates. Jayson Tatum called Williams his “brother for life” as they spent years together in Boston. So while Williams’ season has been challenging after a rough Mavs tenure, he’s at least back in his hometown of Charlotte. And now that he’s on the other side of the Celtics, he raved about his former team Monday.

“It’s definitely nostalgic seeing those guys,” Williams told reporters in Charlotte. “But also fun competing against him. When you’re on the team, you don’t realize how good they are. But when you go against them, you understand what it’s like to get to that level, to be able to win at that rate every single night and get guys’ best.”

Williams was dealt from the Celtics in a sign-and-trade last summer when he got his big payday from the Mavericks. While Williams’ tenure in Dallas started off well, his play tailed off. There was also some chemistry issues, which is why the Mavs dealt him at the deadline. Since then, Dallas has continued taking shots at Williams even after he’s no longer with the organization.

But Williams got a fresh start with his hometown Hornets. He’s also one of the veterans now for a rebuilding roster, which feels like a different world than the contending Celtics. Williams only had great things to say about the C’s and his former teammates. He’ll get to make his return to TD Garden for the first time since leaving on April 12.

“That’s always going to be my brother, man,” Williams said of Tatum. “He’s family. All those guys on that team. We had tremendous years together. … I can talk great about those guys for the rest of my career. As I tell stories when I’m done, I’ll be doing the same.”
