Energy price questions loom as winter approaches

WESTFIELD — Westfield Gas & Electric is telling customers it should cost about $20 a month less to heat an average home this winter compared with last year.

But the 2022-23 winter was an expensive one, even though prices for heating oil and natural gas moderated after the new year. As homeowners prepare for this winter — despite the sunny, 85-degree weather in early October — a host of factors including Russia in Ukraine, new technologies, global demand, refinery capacity and a congressional stalemate can impact homeowners’ ability to keep warm.
