Ellen DeGeneres’s internet-breaking Oscar selfie turns 10 this year

It feels like yesterday that Ellen DeGeneres’ celebrity-packed Oscar selfie broke the internet — but in reality it was 10 years ago.

The group photo was taken at the 86th Academy Awards in 2014 and became the most retweeted photo within an hour in X (formerly Twitter) history at the time, according to People.

“If only Bradley’s arm was longer,” the post from DeGeneres read. “Best photo ever.”

DeGeneres, who was hosting the award show, enlisted Bradley Cooper to snap the star-studded selfie.

The photo features DeGeneres, Cooper, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep, Kevin Spacey and Jared Leto among others.

It appeared that DeGeneres was trying to break the internet, which is exactly what happened. The tweet crashed X — then just Twitter — after it was retweeted 2 million times in just two hours, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The post generated 4.87 million engagements and is one of the top five most retweeted posts on X of all time, the news outlet said. To date, the post has gotten 2 million likes, 2.7 million shares and 170,000 comments.

The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air at 7 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, March 10 on ABC.
