FOXBOROUGH – Eliot Wolf, the Patriots executive vice president of player personnel, met with the media Sunday morning ahead of practice.
He addressed a number of topics including the state of his roster.
Back in April, he was asked if his roster was in a position to support a rookie quarterback. He said then he thought the roster he constructed could support a rookie quarterback.
Asked if he felt that way now, with a struggling offensive line, especially at the tackle position, he didn’t change his mind.
“We’re concerned with every position. We’re always looking to improve and get things good. So whoever the quarterback is, it’s not like, if Jacoby’s the quarterback, we just want to throw him to the wolves,” Wolf said. “We’re excited about our offensive line group. We’re still working to find the correct combination in there. And, I think we have the pieces in place to be able to compete.”
Pressed further, reminded that coach Jerod Mayo had said his trepidation over the offensive line was part of the reason Drake Maye only saw one series in the first preseason game, Wolf still stood by his roster.
“I think we’re just trying to find the right combination. We feel confident in all of these players,” Wolf said. “We’re just working to find the best group, rather than the best five individuals.”
Asked about perhaps adding through free agency, Wolf reiterated he was comfortable with the players on the roster, especially after what he saw during Thursday’s night’s preseason game with the Philadelphia Eagles. Collectively, Brissett and Maye had been sacked 15 times during the joint practice session.
“Obviously, we’re going to look to upgrade on the offensive line or any position if we feel like we can,” Wolf said. “I think we gave up one sack the other night. Again it was Philly’s 2s, but it was an improvement from the practice on Tuesday. So we’re just looking to see how the guys respond to adverse situations.”
