EF-1 tornado was on the ground in Mattapoisett during severe storms, forecasters say

The tornado that touched down in Mattaspoisett on Tuesday morning was confirmed to be an EF-1 tornado, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said the tornado was on the ground for around three minutes after it was detected at around 11:20 a.m. and moved northeast at about 20 mph on North Street just north of Eldorado Drive.

“Numerous large Pine and Maple trees were uprooted falling in several directions,” forecasters said in a statement. “There were also numerous pine trees along the path that were snapped off between 10 and 20 feet above the ground. The most concentrated damage was found along Eldorado Drive by Granada Court.”

A chart tweeted out by the weather service said that the tornado drew a path that was almost one mile long and left no injuries or deaths in its wake. This tornado peaked at 95 mph, according to the chart.

The EF, or Enhanced Fujita scale, ranks the intensity of a tornado’s wind speed. EF-0 and EF-1, between 65 and 110 mph, are considered weak; EF-2 and EF-3 tornadoes are expected to be strong, reaching speeds of 111 to 165 mph; and EF-4 and EF-5 tornadoes reaching somewhere between 166 or over 200 mph are considered violent, according to the weather service.

Forecasters noted that this information is preliminary and is subject to change pending further review.

Three tornado warnings were issued as storms moved east, impacting Worcester, Middlesex, Plymouth, Bristol and Barnstable counties, even stretching across into parts of Cape Cod.
