Driverless SUV with kids inside travels onto field at Mass. school, police say

A driverless SUV with kids inside traveled onto a field at a school in Cohasset early Saturday, forcing adults to rush children out of the path of the vehicle, according to police.

Police received numerous 911 calls around 10:40 a.m. Saturday reporting an out-of-control SUV driving across the front sports field at Cohasset High School on Pond Street, the Cohasset Police Department said in a statement.

When officers arrived, they learned a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban had rolled out of a parking space, gone down a steep hill and onto a soccer field where kindergarten-aged children played lacrosse, according to the department’s statement.

“Coaches and parents were able to rush the children out of the path of the driverless vehicle, which carried two small children in car seats inside,” the statement said.

The vehicle traveled across the field, hitting a coach, crashing through a chain-link fence, crossing Pond Street and eventually stopping in a yard near 150 Pond St., according to the department.

Paramedics treated the two children inside the SUV and a coach for minor injuries at the scene. Nobody was taken to the hospital, the department said.

The incident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed, police noted.

“Due to the quick actions of coaches and bystanders, we averted a major tragedy today,” Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley.
