Drake Maye talks leadership and possibility of being a Patriots captain

EAGAN, Minn. – Mike Vrabel has made it a point of trying to draw more out of Drake Maye in terms of being a leader.

Asked if he was comfortable with all of Vrabel’s prompts, Maye said he’s embraced the not-so-gentle nudge by the Patriots coach.

“I think I want that. I want somebody to push me to do more for the team, have more of an impact with the guys around me,” Maye said following Wednesday’s joint practice with the Vikings. “I feel like if I have that and if I feel like I’m not showing it myself then I need somebody to push me along.”

Earlier in the day, Vrabel was asked if Maye was lacking in the leadership department. The Patriots coach said that wasn’t the case. He just wanted more from his quarterback.

“I think that we always want to try to take a player and we want to meet them where they’re at and then be able to improve on that,” Vrabel said. “So, there’s no finished products no matter what. We always can continue to work on things, focus on our reaction, our response to things and how – as a quarterback or any player, you want it to be perfect.”

Maye, who also took part in a joint flag football practice for Special Olympics Minnesota and Massachusetts athletes following the workout, feels there’s quite a bit of leadership on the offensive side with Morgan Moses, Mike Onwenu, Hunter Henry, Rhamondre Stevenson, Garrett Bradbury and Stefon Diggs.

”I think it starts with me building those guys, and then from there I think guys can kind of bounce off and I really tell those guys to push me,“ Maye said. ”Once I feel like they’re pushing me, I feel like I can give back.”

How would Maye feel about possibly being a captain?

“I think it’s a great honor. I think it’s something that you don’t take lightly around here, especially with those Patriot teams in the past, with the captains they had,” Maye said. “It’s an aspiration to be a captain, but there’s a lot of guys on this team that deserve that, and they’ve played a long time in this league.”
